Reggae artist Lloyd Charmers has passed away at the age of 74.
The singer, keyboard player and record producer died in London on December 27, after suffering a heart attack behind the wheel of his car.
He was taken to Homerton Hospital, but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Charmers was born Lloyd Tyrell in Kingston, Jamaica. He launched his music career in 1962, performing with Roy Willis as The Charmers and then joining The Uniques. He was also a member of the harmony group, The Flames.
He released his first two solo albums, “Reggae Charm” and “Reggae Is Tight” on the Trojan label in 1970.
Charmers set up his own record label, Splash, in the 1970s, and he produced a variety of other artists, including Ken Boothe’s version of Bread’s “Everything I Own”, which topped the Official UK Singles Chart in 1974.
Charmers relocated to the UK in the late 1970s, writes the Jamaica Observer.
