Forbidden Planet

Forbidden Planet, released in 1956, featured a groundbreaking score by Louis and Bebe Barron. It’s considered now to be the first electronic soundtrack, though at the time Barron’s work was referred to as ‘electronic tonalities’.

Forbidden Planet is the first science fiction film in which humans are depicted traveling in a starship of their own construction. It was also the first science fiction film that was set entirely on another planet in deep space, away from the planet Earth. Forbidden Planet is considered one of the great science fiction films of the 1950’s, a precursor of what was to come for the science fiction film genre in the decades that followed.

The video below features Bebe Barron talking about the music and sound effects that she and her husband created for the film.
