Animal Collective Cancel North American Tour

For fans of Animal Collective and Morrissey, it’s been a rough week. Like Moz, Animal Collective have canceled the remainder of their North American tour due to illness, with plans to make up the March dates this summer. Group leader Avey Tare posted a note on Facebook today (March 17) confirming that he’s fighting “an intense case of strep throat.”

“I’m positive that we were as excited as you all to visit all of your towns and have a good time together,” the Centipede Hz singer wrote. “But because of the strain on my voice that’s being caused by an intense case of strep throat, I am unable to play any of these shows. Unfortunately, I wasn’t diagnosed soon enough and haven’t been able to kick this in the right amount of time.”

In addition to previously nixed gigs in Toronto, Cleveland, Covington, Nashville, Royal Oak, and Chicago, Animal Collective have postponed concerts in Madison, Minneapolis, St. Louis, Kansas City, Denver, Salt Lake City, and Boise’s Treefort Music Fest.

Shows in Toronto, Cleveland, Covington, Nashville, and Royal Oak have already been rescheduled for July. New dates for this latest round of postponements are forthcoming. Currently, Animal Collective’s tour will pick up again in France on May 22.

Tour opener Dan Deacon posted a note on Facebook saying that he’s not sure if he’ll be able to play the makeup dates.

“i’ve always wanted to go on a tour like this,” Dan Deacon wrote. “many of the shows would of been the biggest ones i’ve ever played in most of these cities. i’m not sure i’ll get an opportunity like this again and it a huge disappointment that tour had to unravel this way. but of course i support dave’s difficult choice to take time off for his health. i know first hand how stressful it can be to have be ill or in pain on the road and have to make the call to not do a show. its a choice no one wants to be faced with. i’m really glad we got to play a few shows on this tour.”

To all of the AC fans out there. I feel its best you hear it right from the horses mouth. It kills me to have to postpone all these shows and it’s something I could never even have imagined happening. I’m positive that we were as excited as you all to visit all of your towns and have a good time together. But because of the strain on my voice that’s being caused by an intense case of strep throat, I am unable to play any of these shows. Unfortunately, I wasn’t diagnosed soon enough and haven’t been able to kick this in the right amount of time. We promise you all that we are doing everything we can to reschedule all these shows asap and we will be visiting your cities. We hope you can all understand and sympathize with the situation. It’s been really fun for all of us to be playing these days and the energy you all give us makes us want to take it further and further with you and give it right back. Hopefully, we can continue to do this together soon. Until then. Stay Well.
