Pianists Launch Classic Concert Series

The Nederburg Concert Series will start its winter programme at the weekend. The series, which takes place on the Nederburg Manor House’s lawns, will begin with classical recitals by some of the best musicians in the country. Expect to watch award-winning pianists, trios, duos, sopranos, violinists and more. The programme will continue until the beginning of summer when more contemporary artists will be given the stage.

The likes of all-female band, Sterling EQ, and soulstress Lira will round up this year’s Nederburg Concert Series.

But first, we return to the classics. The Pauna-Redfern Piano Duo, which is comprised of Laura Pauna and James Redfern, will begin the season on Sunday. As a pair, this duo first performed in front of an audience at London’s St Martin-in-the-Fields event last year. Together, they have travelled the world and even won a few prizes.

On Sunday, they will offer a recital that will feature some of the works of Franz Schubert, Maurice Ravel and Igor Stravinsky.

Next month, on July 28, you can expect to see pianist Kathleen Tagg alongside violinist Piet de Beer as they perform original compositions as well as Ravel’s Tzigane and Debussy’s sonata for violin and piano. A Trio with a Twist, comprised of pianist Janine Neethling and sisters Lizzie Rennie (viola) and Bridget Rennie Salonen (flute) will perform their own compositions on August 25.

Pianist Philippus Hugo will accompany up-and-coming soprano Hlengiwe Mkhwanazi when she performs at The Nederburg Concert Series for the very first time on September 29. On the same day, you can also see the Stellenbosch University Percussion Duo, comprised of Cherilee Adams and Dylan Tabisher.

The Amadeus Quintet, which first performed in 1982, is a wind quintet with a rich history. Members Simon Ball (bassoon), Elsabé Pretorius (flute), Becky Steltzner (clarinet), Natalie Lawrenson (horn) and Henk Pretorius (oboe) will perform on October 27.

The annual Nederburg picnic concert will feature the South African Sopranos quintet and trio on November 23. South African Music Award winner, Lira, will sing with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra at Nederburg’s annual New Year’s Eve picnic concert on December 31.
