Top Classical Pianist Kathryn Stott Plays in Huddersfield

She’s a world class musician and will receive a warm welcome when she returns to Huddersfield early next month.

Kathryn Stott joins the Orchestra of Opera North for a concert in the Town Hall as part of the Kirklees Orchestral season.

It is little more than a year since she last played in the same concert hall with the same orchestra. Then it was the season’s concert opener and featured a programme of spectacular Russian works.

No-one who heard that concert will be surprised to see Kathryn back.

“She loves working with the orchestra and they love working with her,” said Gordon Stewart, Kirklees Borough organist, who has worked closely with the Opera North team on the current season.

“We had her here in Huddersfield last year playing the Rachmaninov 4. She’s a wonderful musician.”

Kathryn returns to Huddersfield on Wednesday, December 11 for what promises to be one of the most memorable concerts of the season.

Certainly the orchestra is planning a monumental evening of music with work by Britten and Elgar, giants of the British music world. The conductor will be a man who is certainly making his mark on the music map and that is Richard Farnes, Opera North’s much applauded Music Director.

An internationally renowned concert pianist, Kathryn Stott lives in Hebden Bridge.

She is a favourite with BBC Proms’ audiences and is a regular collaborator with the cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

Viewed as one of Britain’s most versatile and imaginative musicians, she is among today’s most engaging pianists.

And in her concert in Huddersfield , the audience will be able to see just why as she brings her unique style to Britten’s Piano Concerto.

The piece’s inclusion in this programme forms part of Opera North’s tribute to one of Britain’s great composers to mark the 100th anniversary of his birth.

Kathryn is in demand for a wide variety of chamber music alliances, playing with some of the world’s leading instrumentalists, as well as appearing on major international concert platforms in recitals and concerto performances.

She has also directed several distinctive concert series and festivals and has developed an extensive and exceptionally varied catalogue of recordings.

Born in Lancashire, she studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School and the Royal College of Music and was a prize-winner at the Leeds International Piano Competition 1978.

Her teachers included Nadia Boulanger, Vlado Perlemuter and Kendall Taylor. She is also a visiting professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London and was recently made an Honorary Member.

In the second half of the concert, the orchestra will play Elgar’s seminal Second Symphony. Written at a time when the world was changing forever, this is one of the most profound works of 20th-century music.

There will be a Talking Music event which will start at 6.40pm. The performance begins at 7.30pm.
