Return of Acclaimed Young Italian Pianist

Alnwick Music Society kicks off the second half of its season with a concert next week. The event, at Alnwick Castle’s Guest Hall, takes place next Thursday and sees the return of young Italian pianist Alessandro Taverna.

Alessandro was born in Caorle near Venice in 1983 and studied at the Accademia Nazionale Santa Cecilia in Rome and the International Piano Academy, Lake Como.

He won prizes at the London International Competition and the Minnesota International Competition in 2009 and enjoyed further success at the Leeds International Piano Competition in the same year.

He was very quickly in demand to perform with the UK’s leading orchestras following those triumphs and has played with the Royal Philharmonic, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

In addition, he has performed at many concerts throughout Europe, Canada and South Africa.

The Independent’s music critic described Alessandro’s work as ‘flawless poetry’.

Following his recital in Alnwick three years ago, members of the music society expressed admiration for his performance.

His programme for this concert is wide-ranging.

He begins with Beethoven Moonlight Sonata followed by Liszt’s Venezia e Napoli and Mendelssohn’s Songs without Words.

From Ravel’s repertoire, he has chosen the Une barque sur l’ocean from Miroirs and paired it with Liszt’s La Lugubre Gondola.

To conclude he turns to Debussy and has chosen some more familiar pieces: Clair de Lune from Suite Bergamasque and L’Isle Joyeuse.

The concert starts at 7.30pm.

Alessandro will be playing on the Steinway D , which is stored at the castle by kind permission of Northumberland Estates.

Tickets for non–members are £16, £15 conc and all students in full-time education will be admitted free of charge.

Tickets can be bought at the Alnwick Playhouse box office, by telephone on 01665 510785 or at www.alnwick playhouse.co.uk
