Russian Father-Son Pianist Duo to Perform in Hanoi

Famed Russian pianists Vladimir and Vovka Ashkenazy will enthrall Hanoi audiences with their performances tonight.

At their show, Vladimir Ashkenazy, one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century and his son Vovka, a talented pianist, will showcase works of renowned composers Franz Schubert, Johannes Brahms, Modest Mussorgsky, and Joseph Haydn.

Vladimir Ashkenazy, 77, began playing the piano at the age of six, according to Wikipedia.

Ashkenazy attended the Moscow Conservatory where he studied with Lev Oborin and Boris Zemliansky.

He won second prize in the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 1955 and first prize in the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition in Brussels one year later.

In 1962, he shared first prize in the International Tchaikovsky Competition with British pianist John Ogdon.

Ashkenazy has five children, including pianist Vovka and Dimitri, a clarinetist.

Jointly held by the Vietnam Performing Arts Center and Hennessy, the Hanoi show is the 18th edition of the Hennessy Concert Series, which has been organized in the capital city since 1996.

The Ashkenazys’ show will take place at 8:00 pm at the Hanoi Opera House at 1 Trang Tien Street, Hoan Kiem District.
