Pianist Daniil Trifonov to Open Classical Concert Series

Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov is to open a new international concert series in Birmingham on Wednesday October 1st.

Trifonov’s reputation for outstanding performances, musical insight and expressive intensity comes on top of all the attention he received in 2010/11 when he won medals at three prestigious competitions in the music world: the Chopin Competition in Warsaw (third prize), the Rubinstein Competition in Tel Aviv (first prize) and the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (first prize and Grand Prix).

His programme at Birmingham Town Hall will be an appealing mix of JS Bach, Beethoven and Liszt.

The young Russian is the first in an impressive list of pianists lined up for the 2014/15 Birmingham Town Hall and Symphony Hall season.

Some, like Trifinov, will be coming to the city for the first time, including the Chinese sensation Yundi playing Chopin on April 15. Home grown talent Benjamin Grosvenor gives a recital on January 21 and the excellent Helene Grimaud makes her Birmingham recital debut on May 14.

Highlights from international orchestras include the Hong Kong Philharmonic’s first appearance in Symphony Hall on March 3. Under music director Jaap van Zweden, the orchestra will be joined by Chinese violinist Ning Feng, also making his Birmingham debut, for Beethoven’s Violin Concerto.

The Czech Philharmonic plays Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony on April 24 coupled with Bruch’s Violin Concerto No 1 with Josef Špacek as soloist.

The St Petersburg Philharmonic and Yuri Temirkanov offer an all-Russian concert on October 31 while Michael Sanderling and the Dresden Philharmonic perform an all-German programme featuring young German violinist Arabella Steinbacher in the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto on June 21.

Also look out for Valery Gergiev and the celebrated string section of the Mariinsky Orchestra performing Strauss’s Metamorphosen at Town Hall on November 7. The following evening, the spotlight falls on the Mariinsky Chorus in Rachmaninov’s Vespers.

Opera highlights include a concert performance of Handel’s Hercules by The English Concert on March 1 and Opera North Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman at the end of the season on July 5.
